For people who want to be in the arena, with the veterans, youth, and horses. You do not need to be a rider. Some of our most valuable program volunteers have never sat on a horse. What you need is patience, reliability, and the ability to stay calm and present around people who are working through something.

Program volunteers sidewalk and lead during mounted sessions, support groundwork and grooming activities, prep and reset the arena, greet participants and families, mentor youth, and hold steady space during veteran sessions.

We ask for one regular shift a week, two to three hours, for at least one full program session of eight to twelve weeks. Consistency matters more than volume here. Participants build trust through repetition, and a volunteer who shows up every Tuesday is worth more to them than one who shows up whenever.

For people who want to help the horses directly and are happy doing the physical, daily, unglamorous work that keeps them healthy. If you would rather muck a stall in the quiet of the morning than stand in front of a group, this is your track.

Our horses do the hardest job in the program. Many of them came to us needing help themselves. Keeping them sound, fed, and content is what makes everything else possible.

The work is feeding, watering, mucking, turnout, grooming, tack cleaning, health monitoring, and general barn upkeep at Ocean View Stables in Daly City, California, always under staff guidance. We ask for one shift a week minimum, three to four hours, and barn work does not pause for holidays or weather. Weekend and holiday coverage is our hardest need. Training is provided and we cover the cost of the background check.

For professionals who want to give us their skill rather than their Saturdays, and who are not looking to join the board. You do the work in your area of expertise, on your own schedule, mostly remotely. This is the fastest way for a busy professional to make a real difference here.

We need help with legal work (formation, bylaws, waivers, contracts, insurance), financial work (bookkeeping setup, reporting, budgets, Form 990, internal controls), structure and operations (policy, risk management, safety protocols, systems, volunteer handbook), and administration (grant writing, donor database, communications, photography).

The commitment is flexible and defined by the project. Some engagements are a single deliverable, like drafting a waiver. Others are ongoing, like monthly bookkeeping. Tell us what you can give and we will match you to something that fits. No horse experience needed, because most of this work never touches a barn.

Saved by the Saddle Foundation is building its founding board, and these are unpaid governance seats. This is not a ceremonial role. We are looking for directors who will read the materials, show up, ask hard questions, and put their name behind the work.

Directors set the mission and annual priorities, approve the budget, oversee leadership, adopt governance policy, and make sure the Foundation meets its legal and reporting obligations. We especially need experience in nonprofit governance, accounting or audit, nonprofit or equine law, fundraising, veteran services, youth services, and equine welfare.

Expect four to six hours a month: quarterly board meetings, one committee, and preparation time. Every director signs our conflict of interest policy annually and completes a background and reference check before appointment.
