The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department opens individual priority registration for the 2027 Jr. Warriors League, its winter youth basketball league, at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 19. Public registration follows at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 21.
Rec & Park runs the league, now in its 26th season, in partnership with the Golden State Warriors. The department calls it inclusive and says it serves well over 1,000 young people from kindergarten through eighth grade, ages 5 to 14, with more than 200 volunteers managing and coaching teams. Divisions are co-ed, and an all-girls division forms if enough teams sign up.
Fees and Season Dates
The individual fee is $123, according to the Jr. Warriors page, and it covers a jersey plus one hour of gym practice time each week. Rec & Park's online registration system showed $128.82 on Friday, October 9.
The eight-week season begins the week of Tuesday, January 5, 2027. Games fall on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays, and championships are set for Saturday, February 27, 2027. Rec & Park lists the game schedule as to be announced.
Rec & Park takes program registrations online and by phone at 415-831-6800, with translation available.
Apply for a Scholarship Before Registering
Families who need help with fees can apply to Rec & Park's Recreation Scholarship Program, created by the Recreation and Park Commission in 2007. Eligible low-income residents get discounts of 50% to 100% on program registration, and the department says scholarships apply to all of its programs.
To qualify, San Francisco residents need a household income no higher than 250% of the federal poverty level or 50% of the city's Area Median Income, the scholarship page says. The program also extends eligibility to young people in foster care, people experiencing homelessness and families in public housing. Children under 18 can receive the full 100% discount when their household takes part in at least two government-subsidized programs, as can youth in foster care up to age 21.
Timing matters. Rec & Park says an application may take as long as two weeks to process and that scholarships do not apply retroactively, so families hoping to use one for Jr. Warriors have good reason to apply before priority registration opens on Monday, October 19. Once granted, eligibility lasts two years.
More Ways for Girls to Play
The department's girls' sports program has more on its calendar:
- Hoop Summit: a daylong event of basketball fundamentals, skill work and games, with a guest speaker, on Saturday, November 14, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at Hamilton Rec Center ($52.36).
- Girls Queen of the Court: a volleyball tournament for ages 11 to 15 on Saturday, December 5, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with beginners at Upper Noe Rec Center and intermediate players at St. Mary's Rec Center ($78.55).
- Teen Open Gym Volleyball: free sessions for ages 6 to 18 on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at Moscone Rec Center, running through Friday, December 18.
Daly City's 2027 League Is Enrolling
In San Mateo County, the City of Daly City's Recreation Services has opened individual enrollment for its 2027 Youth Basketball League. The city describes a recreational league with a positive atmosphere, low-key competition and a focus on learning and development. Volunteer coaches lead the teams, which practice and play games every week.
The league page does not list a fee, age range, deadline or season dates. Families can ask Recreation Services at 650-991-8001 or active@dalycity.org.
The city's Build a Dream Scholarship Program helps Daly City youth ages 0 to 17, along with adults 50 and older, by crediting their accounts toward registration fees. The city uses San Mateo County income guidelines to decide who qualifies, and applicants verify eligibility with documents from CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, General Assistance or WIC. Applicants can receive one scholarship per calendar year, and amounts vary with available funding, the city says.
Volunteer Coaches Wanted
Rec & Park lists jack.situ@sfgov.org as the contact for anyone interested in volunteer coaching in the Jr. Warriors League. Daly City asks volunteer coaches to submit a Live Scan form, posted on its league page.
Girls on the Run Bay Area is also seeking volunteer coaches ages 18 and older and Junior Coaches ages 16 to 18, according to a listing on the youth opportunities page of the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF). The listing gives an application deadline of Monday, October 12. DCYF says its listings are for reference only, so applicants should confirm the date by emailing programs@gotrbayarea.org.

From Saved by the Saddle
Mavericks, Saved by the Saddle's free program for at-promise youth, meets twice a month at Ocean View Stables in Daly City. Young people signed up by a school, counselor, case worker, youth organization or parent learn to read, lead, groom and care for horses from the ground. There is no riding, and a responsible adult stays for the whole session.
